Funeral services for Gladys Sheppard Pickens, age 91 of the Batesville Community, Clarkesville will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11:30 AM from the Clarkesville United Methodist Church with Dr. Phil DeMore, Rev. M. Keith Cox, and Rev. Jan Devereaux officiating. Interment will follow the service in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Pickens passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017.
Born in Stone Mountain on February 6, 1926, Mrs. Pickens was the daughter of the late James W. and Petral Moseley Sheppard. Mrs. Pickens was a faithful and dedicated servant to the Lord. She participated in numerous mission trips with Martha Brown United Methodist Church in East Atlanta and with Clarkesville United Methodist Church. On one trip, their team rebuilt a church in rural Kentucky. She was a loving and dedicated mother. When her children were small, she served as PTA President of Gordon Elementary in Atlanta and served as president of numerous booster clubs- supporting her childrens’ various sports and activities. She was active with Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Georgia and she was instrumental in organizing some of the first Batesville Days fall festivals. She was an active supporter of the Batesville Volunteer Fire Department as a “Fire Bell” and was always seen working the quilt raffle during Batesville Days. She was a bookkeeper with Pickens Enterprises and she was a member of Clarkesville United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pickens is preceded in death by her husband William Howard Pickens and son Phil Pickens.
Mrs. Pickens is survived by daughter Gail P. Hayden of Batesville, son Danny R. Pickens, Sr. of Clarkesville, son and daughter in law Doug and Laura Pickens of Cumming, as well as 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Hillside Memorial Chapel on Friday, September 15, 2017 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
