Ruby Rachel (Cathey) Dunbar

Ruby Rachel Cathey Dunbar, 84, of Mendenhall, Mississippi, passed away on May 20th, 2019, after a short illness. She was surrounded by her children, who were the light of her life, during her final days and left the world in peace. She is now reunited in Heaven with the love of her life for more than 50 years, Joe.

Rachel was born in Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia, on May 7, 1935. She graduated from Nacoochee High School in 1952 at 17.  Rachel was married to Joe R. Dunbar, the only man she ever loved, in July of 1957. They were married almost 55 years, spending most of their marriage in Jackson, Mississippi. Rachel was a dedicated, selfless and loving mother to her two children, Joseph and Roxie, and a rock for Joe as he worked in the auto parts business.  She could light up a room with her smile, laugh at a joke you told and then throw one back that would have you laughing twice as hard. She was a quick-witted woman who didn’t let anything get past her and was never afraid to speak her mind.  A fashionista her entire life, there wasn’t a shopping trip Rachel didn’t enjoy - she was always accessorized - and shoes were her specialty. She loved putting on her best heels, fanciest dress and dancing to the likes of Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison, but was at her happiest cooking a big meal (usually her famous spaghetti) surrounded by her family. 

Rachel is survived by her sister, Yvonne, son, Joe, daughter, Roxie, grandchildren, Evan and Emily, son-in-law Ed, daughter-in-law Kirsten and other family and friends.

Rachel is preceded in death by her husband, Joe and brothers, Young and William.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2019 at the Hillside Memorial Chapel with Rev. Paul Flynn officiating. Interment will follow in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 Noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.
