David Matthews Obituary

David McRitchie Matthews, age 80, passed away on September 29, 2021.

A devoted husband and father, Mr. Matthews was born in Newnan, Georgia on November 22, 1940. As a boy he studied at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta for several years. Upon graduation from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) with a degree in English, he began a varied career including farming in Coweta County and retail management at Brooks Bros. in Atlanta. In the mid-1970's he returned to painting, his first love. For many years he studied informally with the Atlanta artist, Bruce Hafley. In addition to private commissions are many works, including murals, commissioned by commercial decorating firms for country clubs, board rooms, banks and hotels both in America and abroad. With his wry wit and erudition, David often inadvertently found himself the center of attention at social gatherings. His friends and family will surely miss him and his infectious sense of humor. He is survived by his wife Ann and son Ben.

Survivors include his loving wife Ann Hubbuch Matthews of Cornelia, son Ben Matthews of Atlanta and many extended family and friends.

Services for Mr. Matthews were private.
